Day
1... I will meet you in the Baggage Claim area at Las Vegas
Airport. As you come into the Baggage Claim area, just look for
me... I will be holding a sign which will have on it Nigel Turner.
I shall then transfer you to our chosen hotel, where you will
have already been checked in. Later that evening after you have
had an opportunity to freshen up after your long trip, we shall
meet up in our room for a drink and the opportunity to get to
know one another.
Days
2, 3 and 4… The next day we shall leave Las Vegas for
Zion Canyon National Park where we spend the next three nights.
This is the time of year when Zion is at its very best for photographic
opportunities. The floor of Zion Canyon is lined with yellow leafed
Cottonwoods as the graceful Virgin River snakes its way through
the canyon. Towering golden cliffs provide magical backdrops and
the light is at its very best.
We shall capture on film the sunrise at the Tower’s of the
Virgin and also the Great Streaked Wall, before spending the rest
of the day within the Canyon itself. Late evening will find us
shooting the Watchman and Virgin River as the light fades into
darkness. We shall also have ample time to explore the upper reaches
of Zion, where the rock formations are unique to this region.
All in all we will be spoilt for choice during our time at Zion.
Days
5, 6 and 7… Our next three nights will find us at Bryce
Canyon National Park, a true gem within the park system. It really
is difficult not to get exceptional images from here. We shall
be up and out at dawn to see the rising sun striking the Hoodoo’s
and Spires in the main amphitheater. Each day we will spend the
mornings shooting these fantastic formations as the light bounces
and reflects amongst the Hoodoo’s, providing superb backlighting
conditions. If we are lucky, there may even be an early sprinkling
of snow, which will provide even more contrast! During the afternoons
you will have the opportunity to walk down into the amphitheater
on the Queen’s Garden or Navajo loop trails, where you will
be able to photograph the formations up close.
Days
8 and 9… After three glorious days at Bryce Canyon
we head to the small town of Page, Arizona. From here we shall
be visiting the spectacular Antelope Canyon which has become world
famous for it photogenic twists and curves that have taken thousands
of years to carve out of the Navajo Sandstone. We shall spend
the morning down in the Canyon exploring all the delights on offer.
That afternoon you will have some free time to visit the town
of Page. The next morning we shall visit Horseshoe Bend, an overlook
of the Colorado River deep in Glen Canyon.
Days
10 and 11… Our next two nights will find us at Monument
Valley, made famous by John Ford Westerns. Little needs to be
said about Monument Valley except that to many it symbolizes the
American West with its grand red rock formations. We shall have
the whole day to explore at our leisure this classic landscape.
Amongst the many areas we shall be visiting are the Mittens, Artist
Point, Elephant Butte and Rain God Mesa. These are only a few
of the many spectacular subjects on offer.
Days
12 and 13… Similar to Zion Canyon is Canyon De Chelly,
but rather than being deep inside the canyon as at Zion, here
we will spend most of our time along the rim.. looking down! Canyon
De Chelly is one of the largest canyons of its kind and has numerous
Indian ruins nestled into the huge cliffs that in places rise
to 1,500ft from the canyon floor. One of the most famous of these
is White House Ruin, which is accessible by a 1.5 mile trail.
We shall have the time to visit White House for those of you who
fancy this hike down into the canyon itself. We shall also visit
many of the overlooks and spend late evening at Spider Rock view
point.
Our
last night will be in Phoenix, Arizona before your departing flights
back to the UK on the Saturday morning. This trip truly represents
the very best that the Canyon’s have to offer, and we will
be spoilt with fantastic photographic opportunities that will
present themselves. |
