Day
1... I will meet you as you get off the plane in Las Vegas.
As you come through the door into the baggage area, just look
for me... I will be holding a sign which will have on it Nigel
Turner Landscape Photography. I shall then transfer you to our
chosen hotel. Later that day after you have had an opportunity
to freshen up after your long trip... we shall meet up in our
room for a drink and the opportunity to get to know one another.
Days
2 and 3.. The following morning we shall set of from Las
Vegas for the 277 mile drive to the south rim of Grand Canyon
National Park where we spend our next two nights. Hopefully we
shall arrive in time to capture the sunset from Mojave Point,
just one of numerous points dotted along the south rim. The following
morning will find us at Yavapia Point for sunrise were we will
capture the pre dawn and early morning light. Later in the afternoon
we shall visit the many varied points along the West Rim Drive
which offer great views into the Canyon. As the afternoon draws
longer the light in the canyon begins to turn the formations into
orange and red glow. Sunset
will be photographed from Hopi Point, the most spectacular viewpoint
of them all. The following morning will again find us out at sunrise
before we vacate our hotel and head of to Monument Valley.
Days
4 and 5… On Tuesday morning we leave the Grand Canyon
and head to Monument Valley. On the way we shall take a short
diversion to a small but impressive overlook known to a few as
‘Coal Canyon.’ Once again we shall arrive in Monument
Valley in time to catch the setting sun lighting up the Mittens.
The following morning we shall be up nice and early , and make
our way back up to the Valley where we shall have the opportunity
to capture the pre dawn light. Later that morning after breakfast
we shall go down into the Valley, where we shall spend the rest
of the day and drive the 17 mile scenic drive, stopping at all
the points of interest. Weshall enjoy another sunset that evening
from near the visitors center. The following day we leave Monument
Valley and head to the small town of Moab, but not before we have
taken the opportunity to capture another rising sun.
Days
6 and 7… Today, Moab is a thriving tourist town, nestled
amongst the red bluffs of Canyon Country. This is where we shall
be based for the next two nights. We generally arrive in Moab
around lunch time and you will have the remainder of the day to
yourselves to explore this quaint town. The following morning
we shall be up very early and make our way to Arches National
Park where we shall spend the whole day visiting and capturing
on our film the red rock formations and arches. Sunrise will be
behind the North Window, a majestic arch which also frames Turret
Arch. Later that morning you will be given plenty of time to hike
the Devil’s Garden, an easy graded trail which will take
you to Landscape Arch among many others.
During the afternoon we shall visit the area know as the Windows,
where Double Arch is located before spending sunset at Balanced
Rock. Those of you with a lot of energy will be given the chance
to take the strenuous hike up to Delicate Arch where you can spend
sunset if you so wish.
Days
8 and 9… We leave Moab for the short journey to Capitol
Reef National Park, where once again we shall spend the next two
nights. Arriving around mid day the remainder of the afternoon
will be spent in the Fruita area. Here you will find orchards
and old weathered barns, small streams and old farming implements
dating back to the
end of the 1800’s. All of this is surrounded by huge red
rock cliffs decorated with desert varnish.
The following day will give you time to explore the parks many
short trails, such as the one that leads to Hickman Bridge. Another
trail takes you up to Cohab Canyon where some wonderful close
up abstracts can be found as well as exceptional views of the
surrounding landscape. Later that afternoon you will have the
chance to hike through Grand Wash, a simple 2.7 miles through
a very narrow and deep canyon. The following morning afterbreakfast
we leave for Bryce Canyon National Park, one of the true gems
in the world.
Days
10 and 11… Bryce Canyon must surely rank as one of
the most photogenic places in the world and we shall have ample
time to obtain some outstanding images of this park. Sunrise and
early mornings are fabulous as the light dances among the spires
and hoodoo formations, making them glow as though they are on
fire.
We have two mornings like this in Bryce Canyon to get all the
images you could possibly want. Make sure you bring a long lens
so that you can isolate certain formations. During the afternoon
you will have time to go below the canyon rim (trail conditions
permitting) to see the formations closer.
Days
12 and 13...… The next two nights will be in Zion Canyon
National Park. With its towering golden cliffs, stark Cottonwood
trees and the graceful Virgin River we will be spoilt for choice
of subject. Our first afternoon will be spent in the top part
of Zion where endless amounts of swirling sandstone formations
exist, along with pines trees dotted around. Sunset will see us
capturing the last few rays of light hitting the Watchman. Next
morning at sunrise, we shall shoot the Court of the Patriarchs
as the rock formations glow golden and the shadows begin to creep
up the walls. The rest of the day willbe spent in Zion Canyon
where you will be able to take the short hike around to Emerald
Pools. During the afternoon we shall move up to the far end of
the Canyon where subdued
light produces an alpenglow effect and will astound you in its
quality providing numerous photographic opportunities once again.
The next morning will find us behind the old visitor center looking
towards the Towers of the Virgin for our last sunrise shoot of
the trip. After breakfast we leave for Las Vegas arriving around
mid day. |
