| Day
1... I will meet you in the luggage claim area in Salt Lake
airport. As you come through the door into the area, I will be
holding a sign which will have on it Nigel Turner. I shall then
transfer you to our chosen hotel, where you will have already
been checked in. Later that evening after you have had an opportunity
to freshen up after your long trip... we shall meet up in my room
for a drink and the opportunity to get to know one another.
Days
2 through 6… We shall leave Salt Lake the following
morning for Jackson Hole, Wyoming, our base for the next five
nights. The small town of Jackson is ideally located close to
Grand Teton National Park where we have a week to explore this
area at our leisure. Unlike many of my other trips where we move
every couple of days to a new location and are somewhat at the
mercy of the weather, this Holiday Workshop allows us the opportunity
to visit areas at various times under different lighting conditions.
The
Teton Range are at their very best at sunrise and early morning.
Alpen glow displays are often fabulous, bathing the mountains
in a warm pinkish light. Over the course of the week we shall
be up and out early to capture this light along the many various
viewpoints along the Rockefeller Parkway, which parallels the
Grand Tetons.
We shall also visit Moulton Ranch, an old abandoned building along
Mormon Row which as the rising sun first strikes makes the barn
glow. Later that morning we shall have the time to photograph
the many other historical buildings with the Tetons providing
the backdrop. Another sunrise will be spent at Schwabacher’s
Landing where a mirror reflection of the mountains shine in the
Snake River. Similar images will be found at Oxbow Bend with
Mount Moran, and hopefully we shall have some rising mist and
colourful Aspens to add to the atmospheric effects.
Days
7 through 13… Our second week will be spent in Yellowstone
National Park, one of the largest parks in the USA. World famous
for its geysers, fumroles, waterfalls and the Grand Canyon of
the Yellowstone, we shall be kept very busy exploring this wonderful
location. Early mornings will find us mostly in the geyser areas
of the park, at such places as the Midway Geyser Basin, Black
Sands and Biscuit Basin. Here we will find dozens of richly coloured
paint pots of bubbling mud and active geysers. You will have ample
time to spend in each location. We shall also visit the Lower
Falls of the Yellowstone River as it thunders and drops hundreds
of feet, winding its way past golden coloured cliffs. During the
afternoons we shall have the opportunity to view and photograph
the wildlife that is abundant, especially in the Hayden Valley.
Here we are likely to see Bison and Elk. We also have a good chance
to see either Black or Grizzly Bears in the Tower and Dunraven
Pass area. We should also see Moose along the Yellowstone River.
One of the best aspects of a trip like this to Yellowstone and
the Grand Tetons is the ability that we have in being in the right
place at the right time. Even if we were to experience some inclement
weather conditions we can always return at a later date, when
the light is right. This allows us to have a flexible itinerary,
visiting locations under the best conditions.
Day
14… We leave West Yellowstone and return to Salt Lake
where we shall spend the night prior to your return flight to
the UK. |
