Taking coastal landscape photography can be an incredibly satisfying subject and can result in some absolutely stunning images. You will need to abide by general guidelines for landscape photography and here are a few.

1. Get There at The Right Time

Coastal landscape photography can be done at any time day or night, but those who get the best results favor Golden hour or blue our as a favorite time to shoot. Getting there at this time allow you to capture stunning changing lighting conditions so get used to shooting from before sunrise or until after sunset.

2. Get a ND Grad Filter

This is the secret of coastal landscapes that are shot at those golden and blue hours. This is a weapon of choice for a lot of landscape photographers. This ND Grad Filter allows you to get correct exposures on your sky, which acts as a huge and bright light source at the same time as the fore and mid ground, which can often be in a shadow at the same time.

3. Reduce Camera Shake

Shooting in a lowlight means you need to stabilize your camera. This usually means a tripod. You might also use a remote shutter release or the time delay functionality that is standard with the lot of DSLR’s.

4. Remember Your Foregrounds

If you're concentrating to get the beautiful colors of the sky don't forget that foreground interest which adds an element to a coastal landscape that is irreplaceable. Scout around your location to turn up potentially interesting foregrounds that can complete your composition.

5. Shutter Speed and Water

If you're taking photographs in a lowlight, with a slow shutter speed then water can often appear blurred or misty. If you do not like this affect you will want to make your shutter speed faster and adjust your settings accordingly. This can get difficult in low light, so get to the location where there's a little more light around. You can always shoot your photograph with wider apertures or increase the ISO but neither of these options is great for landscapes.
